UPDATE: some of the Koopalings were updated to reflect their new designs from the New Super Mario Bros Wii. Still no Jr. because he wasn't around in the 80's...and i don't like him. He's the most boring character in the Mario universe.

This might just be my favorite piece in my Mario Collection.
Do you remember when the Airships flew into the 7 different Mushroom Nations in Super Mario Bros. 3 to steal the magic wands from the kings? Well, this is my version of that scene from world 1, the Grasslands.
This was originally going to be a piece based on Bowser's invasion of the Starbit Festival in Super Mario Galaxy, but I decided to go old school instead...as I am prone to do ;^)

The castle is based off of the sprite used in SMB3 for the Nintendo and I added a small mushroom town inspired by the artwork from the 1989 cartoon "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3".

My love affair with Bowser's airship armada continues. I worked with the original SMB3 concept and melded it with the design used in SMG and I am thrilled with the outcome. I also drew some mini-airships that always flew along side Bowser's and the Koopalings' larger airships.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the last truly magical Mario Game. The sequels that followed were great and extremely fun but SMB3 had a quality that has never been rivaled. One of it's claims to fame is that it introduced some of the most original concepts for characters, enemies, levels and items that have ever been seen in the Mario universe but we just don't see many of them used anymore. I would love to see more boomerang bros, or Boom-Boom, or mico-mugger-goombas, etc...

As soon as I looked at this, the Grasslands overworld song started playing in my head. The 16-bit SNES version from my All-Stars game.

I want a 3D platmormer based off of SMB3 called, Super Mario Bros. 3-D. All the levels will be same, exept completly in 3D! And The airships... in 3D! (unlike SMG's mini-airships) how badass?!?

I really enjoy the artwork and your description. It's great to find people who understand the magic behind Mario and take it seriously. Too many people look at the simple plot line and the fact that it's a video game and never look twice.

I agree that Super Mario Bros. 3 was the last magical Mario game. Even though I found Yoshi's Island amazing, technically it's a Yoshi game.

World was too familiar, 64 was too bland (once you got used to it), Sunshine was good but felt irrelevant, and Galaxy had... well... bee Mario--enough said.

I personally feel that the people behind Mario these days are only living up to the already low expectations of video games. New Super Mario Bros was a fun throwback, but nothing else. The one for Wii was the same, only with more people. And then Miyamoto actually up and front ADMITTED to avoiding a story line to Galaxy 2... Why do insanely brilliant people tend to have a habit of neglecting their own gifts?

But all in all, I still love the series and I hope I don't sound like a wussy nostalgia f*g, which I have been called before. In reality, I have enough going on in my life that it doesn't matter if Mario has changed--but that still doesn't mean I don't care. ;) Thanks for listening to this rant of the day :)
